Dubai Emirates has “temporarily” stopped its Thursday and Saturday flights to Amman beginning Monday, a company spokesperson said yesterday.

“Starting from 31 October 2011, Emirates will operate 11 flights per week to Amman. Flights EK 901/ EK902 on Saturdays and Thursdays will be removed from service temporarily for operational reasons,” the spokesperson said in a statement to Gulf News.

“Emirates has already contacted all passengers affected and offered them alternative flights,” the spokesperson added.

Passengers were booked on the next day of their original travelling date as an option.

During short vacations, such as Eid, as well as summer vacations, Amman becomes one of the busiest destinations in the Middle East. Other destinations include Cairo and Beirut.

Peak season

The suspension coincides with the peak season of travelling for the Eid Al Adha break.

It was not immediately clear whether there was a similar suspension of flights to other destinations. The spokesperson did not elaborate on “operational reasons” for the suspension.

Airlines, including those based in the region, considerably increase their flights to Saudi Arabia during the Haj season, when nearly 1.5 million pilgrims fly to Jeddah.
