Ilyas and Mustafa Galadari Group (IMG), developers of City of Arabia, has appointed Dhabi Contracting as the main contractor for Wadi Walk, a component of the multi-billion project.

The $5 billion (Dh18.3bn) retail, residential, commercial and entertainment project is located in Dubailand,

Dhabi Contracting won the contract to build the city's Mediterranean style low-rise apartments and waterfront community, over four other companies, for their competitive bid.

With soil testing, excavation and shoring works already complete, Dhabi Contracting is starting foundation works on Wadi Walk.

Chairman Ilyas Galadari said: "We are excited to announce Dhabi Contracting as the main contractor for Wadi Walk. We are confident with our decision as they are a skilled team who will deliver the project at the highest standard."

Sami Edwards, Managing Director of Dhabi Contracting, said: "With about 1,000 workers and 40 engineers on site for Mall of Arabia, we have now hired about 500 more to build Wadi Walk."

Wadi Walk, a waterfront community set along a meandering eight-kilometre canal, will provide residents and visitors with a range of retail outlets, cafés and restaurants and ample walkable spaces.

The canal will be in deep blue colour and will be kept pristine by 11 water filtration plants sunk within the basement. Visitors will be able to cruise the waterway aboard electronically powered fleets of water taxis.
