MUSCAT -- The expansion project along Al Athaiba section of the highway adding a third lane and other links to ease traffic is fast progressing according to reports from the Muscat Municipality which is carrying out the expansion plan.
Once the project is completed, the expanded highway will also help drain rainwater across wadis in this part of the city thus help solving the drainage problems of wadi water in Al Athaiba area.
The project envisages the connection of all traffic lights electronically, the expansion of Wadi al Athaiba flyover and the addition of three tracks in either direction apart from improving roads to Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Ghala Industrial Area, Royal Hospital, Al Athaiba North and Al Ansab.
"The existing Wadi al Athaiba overpass will be replaced with a longer flyover and all the roundabouts will be converted into 4-way junctions fitted with traffic signals", sources close to the Muscat Municipality said, adding, "The step is considered an important development in the Al Athaiba area and the road leading to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the busy area of Ghala Industrial Estate, the Royal Hospital, Northern Athaiba and Al Ansab.
A third lane will be added at the flyover across Al Athaiba roundabout on the Sultan Qaboos Street, while the roundabout below the flyover will be converted into a 4-way junction along with the 4-track-road on both sides".
The addition of a third lane to the bridge over Al Athaiba roundabout on Sultan Qaboos Street in addition to the conversion of the roundabout under the bridge to intersections with signals with four lanes in each direction and a fifth lane on the right for free movement are also part of this project.
It will also facilitate the U-turn for vehicles coming from Seeb and Muscat. The two roundabouts of Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and Royal Hospital will be converted into intersections.
The project also includes adding a third lane for the bridge over Al Ghubra roundabout in Sultan Qaboos Street for vehicles coming from Al Khuwair to Seeb and the opposite direction in addition to the conversion of the roundabout to intersections with light signals and four lanes for each direction and fifth lane on the right for free movement of vehicles. It also will provide the possibility to return to the opposite direction.
Additionally, the two roundabouts of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the Royal Hospital will also be converted into junctions to help ease access to the Sultan Qaboos Street, Muscat Expressway, the July 23 Street and the street leading to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.
The roundabout in front of Rawasco leading to the November 18 Street will be converted into a 4-way junction.
