Number plate 2 of category 1 grabbed all the attention at the Abu Dhabi Police’s open vehicle number plates auction, held on Saturday, after bagging a whopping Dh10.1 million.

The popular auction generated revenues of more than Dh55 million at the Emirates Palace.

Abu Dhabi Police, in cooperation with Emirates Auction, held the public auction for 60 new distinguished vehicle number plates (Category 1), on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its establishment.

More than 800 people gathered to place their bids for their favourite vehicle numbers.

Speaking to Gulf News after obtaining the number plate 2, Abu Dhabi-based Ahmad Al Marzouqi, 23, said: “The number 2 is a very special number in the Emirati community as it belongs to our National Day — December 2.”

“I appreciate President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for providing a beautiful place to live which is very safe, and has a rich tradition.

“National Day reminds us of each and every sacrifice the country’s rulers have made to provide us the best life,” the real estate businessman said.

Number plate 11 was the second most sought after number which was sold at Dh6.4 million, while the third number (10) bagged Dh5.4 million.

Huge competition

The number plate 2 witnessed a huge competition and more than 20 people bid for it.

The number plate 22 also attracted many bidders and earned Dh4.05 million. Number 17 was purchased for Dh3.3 million, while number 60 was sold for Dh2.9 million.

The auction listed the numbers on the company’s website, including five double-digit plates, 15 three-digit plates, 19 four-digit and 17 five-digit plates.

Abdulla Matar Al Mannaei, chairman of Emirates Auction, expressed his gratitude to the leadership on the passage of 60 years of Abu Dhabi Police’s establishment, which has succeeded in achieving its goals of excellence and provide safety and security to the society.

The most prominent numbers in the auction were 10, 60, 333, 600, 999, 1000, 1111, 5050, 6000, 6060, 6666, 9090, 9999, 10000, 55555, 60000, 66666 among other distinctive numbers that attracted collectors of unique number plates.
