Academy Award nominated writer John Logan’s hit Broadway play Red, which delves into the life of the legendary artist Mark Rothko, will have be staged in Dubai’s The Junction in Alserkal Avenue on October 29 at 7pm.

Taking place from 1958 to 1960, this play, which won the Tony Award for Best Play in New York in 2010, explores the reasons behind why Rothko, who along with Jackson Pollock was one of the leaders of the abstract expressionist movement, first accepted then cancelled a lucrative commission for a series of murals at the famous Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagram’s Building in New York.

The play is told through the eyes of Rothko’s assistant Ken, who is at first intimidated by working with the great artist, then comes to oppose many of his philosophies and approaches to art and life, until it builds to a final conflict between the two men.

The role of Rothko will be played by Dubai-based theatre actor Osman Aboubakr, who is being currently trained in Rothko’s painting techniques by Dubai artist Lindsey Gildea.

“When I first read Red, I was struck not only by the extraordinary insight into Rothko and his craft, but by the slow-burning relationship between the two men” said Alex Broun, the play’s director, in a statement.

Tickets are available at info@thejunctiondubai.com or call The Junction on 04-3388525.
