The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will this week host the fifth World Aviation Safety Summit (WASS) in Dubai, where the main topics for debate will be the latest developments in traffic management and airspace design, a press release issued on Monday said.

The summit, which will be held on the 11th and 12th of April at the Intercontinental Dubai Festival City hotel, will also focus on other important topics in the aviation industry, such as flying over conflict zones and terrorism threats, as well as safety monitoring and measurement, the press release added.

While the number of air accidents had slightly declined last year, those resulting in fatalities rose 97 percent year-on-year, according to the data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The Middle East region has been at the forefront of the surge in passenger traffic growth, with Dubai International Airport now the busiest airport in the region and the busiest international airport in the world.

There is also over $100 billion worth of airport projects underway and planned across the Middle East, including the Muscat International Airport project in Oman.

Middle Eastern airlines are expected to continue facing challenges, including political instability, softening demand, currency fluctuations, and lower oil prices this year, according to a Gulf News report, citing a report by IATA.
