Muscat - Leading Omani pipe manufacturer TMK Gulf International Pipe Industry (TMK GIPI) LLC has won a prestigious contract to supply 4,500 tonnes of pipes to local oil and gas producer Daleel Petroleum in a deal that is set to further strengthen the manufacturer's credentials as a specialist supplier of pipes for the energy industry. The Sohar-based firm, which is a subsidiary of global pipe manufacturer TMK, announced last week that it was awarded a contract to provide the pipes for a 52-km long sour service pipeline project planned as part of Daleel Petroleum's operations in the Sultanate. Delivery of the high pressure Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) steel pipes will commence from TMK GIPI's facility in Sohar Industrial Estate next month, the company said in a statement.

The pipes, which will be supplied in lengths of 18 metres -- as opposed to the standard length of 12 metres -- will offer savings in excess of 30 per cent in construction costs, as well as help accelerate the execution of the project, according to TMK GIPI. "Additionally, a local manufacturer brings other synergies to the customer in the form of just-in-time delivery, less handling and related logistical challenges, as well as providing a cushion against any damaged products, which can be immediately replaced," the company stated. Further, in order to secure the steel pipes against the corrosive effects of the sour products that will be pumped through the pipeline, the pipes will be coated with the company's 3LPE system, which is a multi-layer coating structure composed of three coating materials of fusion bonded epoxy (FBE), copolymer adhesive and PE or PP top coats.

The latest order comes as TMK GIPI wraps up a sizable expansion and modernisation of its Sohar facility. With oil and gas operators mandated to prioritise locally sourced products and services for their procurements under the government's In-Country Value (ICV) programme, TMK GIPI is looking to make sure it has the manufacturing and technical wherewithal to meet the pipe requirements of domestic and regional markets.

Covering an area of 240,000 sq metres, the Sohar mill features newly installed capacity for the manufacture of 6-inch pipes targeted at the oil and gas industry. The high-tech improvements include a cutting-edge heat treatment line, threading facilities capable of processing Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG), and inspection lines.

Last November, TMK GIPI won a contract to supply around 32,000 tonnes of steel pipes for the landmark Muscat-Sohar Product Pipeline project of Orpic Logistics. The 290-km multi-product fuel pipeline will link the Sultanate's two refineries in Muscat and Sohar, as well as a new national fuel storage hub under construction at Al Jifnain.
