DUBAI: Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the National Olympic Committee, Dubai Women’s Run (DWR) announced its 7th edition at the press conference that took place at The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City. The 2017 instalment of the annual run expects to attract over 10,000 women to participate this year including Kenyan long-distance track and road runner, Tegla Loroupe, who will be one of the elite athletes participating in this year’s Run.

The UAE Athletics Federation (UAEAF) announced the leading marketing and events group, Plan b as the race organizers earlier this year. Plan b Group has since made developments to and enhanced the DWR agenda.

UAEAF and Plan b introduced the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWAC) as the ‘Official Soul’ of the Run this year. The association with DFWAC highlights the event’s commitment to solidify the message of women empowerment in the UAE add traction to its annual ‘Elimination to Violence Against Women’ / Orange campaign.

In line with the meaningful alliance the organizers introduced this year’s DWR ambassadors, which include:

  • Lamia Tariq Malallah AlFarsi (UAE Wonder Girl) – at the tender age of six, she is the youngest Emirati gymnast registered in the UAE competing locally and internationally in the sport of Rhythmic Gymnastics
  • Dareen Barbar - amputee athlete, fitness instructor and motivational speaker
  • Sana Khan – painter and philanthropist
Joining the women of substance is Bollywood actor/producer, fitness advocate, and activist Sonu Sood who will play the only male ambassador for the 7th Dubai Women’s Run. Besides movies and fitness, the actor is a strong supporter of causes that enable women to rise above oppression and violence.

IAAF Council Member and President of the UAE Athletics Federation, Ahmed Al Kamali said, “Dubai Women’s Run is taking an important stand this year to uphold the Nation’s agenda to put women empowerment at the forefront in addition to encouraging women to prioritize health and fitness. The Federation is delighted to have Plan b as the event’s custodians for the next five years, which marks a key milestone in government and private sector partnerships to further, strengthen landmark platforms like DWR.   

Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) who was also present on the occasion commented, “Over the years, Dubai Women’s Run has grown to become a popular event not just in the UAE but across the region. The event embodies the council’s goal to create a distinctive sports community to popularize the culture of exercise, physical activities and sports among women and to establish a solid foundation amongst professionals and amateurs.”

‘This year, the bars have been raised and the event has received a pleasant and promising uplift much needed for the dynamic sports sector and diverse female population across the region”, he added.

Harmeek Singh, Founder and Chairman of the Plan b Group said, “It is an honor to be bestowed with the responsibility of organizing Dubai Women’s Run which has garnered immense growth and popularity over the last six years. Harmeek Singh extended his commitment to nurturing national talent at the grassroots level during the event by vowing to sponsor Lamia’s training, in line with which he presented her with a cheque as a token of his commitment. This is the first time that a private entity in the UAE has signed on an upcoming Emirati athlete as sponsor and official agent.

Maryum Bin Thaneya, Communications Director at DFWAC, said, “Plan b has been a friend to the Foundation for many years and they have supported the foundation’s causes and objectives beyond the call of duty in more ways than one. I would like to thank all involved for their conscientious approach towards DWR and commitment towards the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It is times like these that our efforts to raise awareness for such causes seem worthwhile”.

DFWAC will organize an awareness activation at DWR as a prelude to the 2018 edition of the Orange Campaign, which will aim to amplify the awareness towards the ‘Elimination of Violence Against Women’.

The organizers look forward to working with ARN studios, RTA, Dubai Police, Ambulance Department, Khansaheb and Dubai Municipality to help make this a special day for all women.

Online registrations for DWR have commenced the 7th edition.

Dubai Women’s Run 2017 that comprises of a 10 kilometers 5 kilometers run will take place at the Marasi Business Bay on 17th November 2017.
