Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: – The Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS), a joint initiative by the United Arab Emirates and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), held a special side-event on the evening of Monday, 4 November to drive the future of manufacturing.
Held alongside the 18th session of the UNIDO General Conference that is taking place in Abu Dhabi from 3-7 November 2019, the side-event included keynote addresses delivered by the summit co-chairs H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Industry, United Arab Emirates, and the President of the UNIDO General Conference Abu Dhabi; and LI Yong, Director General of UNIDO.
H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Industry, United Arab Emirates, and the President of the 18th UNIDO General Conference Abu Dhabi said: “Our commitment to GMIS and its objectives is strong, both as the government of the United Arab Emirates and as the Ministry of the Energy and Industry. We are keen to share knowledge and to help developing nations improve their economies. We look forward to bringing together various stakeholders with the mutual aim of improving the economies of countries across the world. As our world progresses in light of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we will all ultimately be held accountable if we do not evolve. Governments, policy makers and experts must all come together to build a more sustainable and inclusive future for generations to come.”
LI Yong, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) said: “The future of manufacturing and in particular during this era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is a topic, which attracts huge interest and public debate. The UNIDO mandate to promote inclusive and sustainable development is one that aims to help build dynamic, sustainable, innovative and people-centered economies that leaves no one behind. Advanced innovation must lead to shared prosperity for all people. The Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit—GMIS—contributes much to this discourse to ensure that innovation and frontier technology processes are inclusive. In our capacity as co-Chair, along with our counterparts in the UAE, UNIDO is committed to the GMIS initiative. The Summits in 2017 and 2019, held here in the UAE and the Russian Federation respectively, have already built momentum in furthering the global conversation”
The GMIS special event also saw UNIDO launch a new Industrial Analytics Platform (IAP) to strengthen data-based decision-making in support of the organisation’s capacity-building activities. Introduced by Hiroshi Kuniyoshi, UNIDO’s Deputy Director General, the IAP is an innovative tool featuring data on select indicators of industrial development and relevant research by leading experts in an accessible format.
The side-event was attended by Ministers, Ambassadors, and representatives from both the private and public sectors to share best practices, knowledge, and experiences.
Namir Hourani, Managing Director and Member of the GMIS Organising Committee shared insights for the next edition of The Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit, which will be held under the theme: Glocalisation: Towards Inclusive and Sustainable Global Value Chains. Michael Krake, Deputy Director, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany and H.E. Ernst Peter Fischer, German Ambassador to the UAE, also made an address on behalf of the Host Country participation at GMIS 2020.
As the world’s first cross-industry platform, GMIS unites manufacturers, governments, NGOs, technologists and investors in a mission to harness the 4IR’s transformation of manufacturing to enable the regeneration of the global economy. GMIS 2020 aims to inspire discussion and agreement on a strategic pathway in order to contribute to promoting sustainable industrial development through innovation and the adoption of the Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies on a global scale.
The insights shared during the side-event will lay the foundation for the discussions around the main themes for the next edition of the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit in 2020 which will take place from 20-21 April, alongside Hannover Messe, the world’s largest industrial technology tradeshow, in Germany.

The theme of the GMIS 2020 Summit will be Inclusive and Sustainable Value Chains. UNIDO has longstanding experience and knowledge of helping to boost competitiveness and enabling SMEs to access international markets through value chain participation. The digitization of regional and global value chains poses potential challenges and gains to developing countries. The Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) is a global platform that was established to achieve universal consensus on the future of manufacturing by convening leaders from governments, businesses, and civil society.
