Abu Dhabi: A 45 year old patient who had been suffering from symptoms resulting from a large benign uterine tumour successfully underwent surgery at Mediclinic Al Noor Hospital without having her uterus removed. The benign uterine tumour which is also known as a fibroid, weighed 1.422 kg and measured 12cm in length, 14cm in width and 7cm in depth.
Dr. Nidal Al Attia, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Mediclinic Al Noor Hospital, said: “Our main aim was to safely remove the large fibroid in a manner that would save the uterus and preserve fertility as the patient was hoping to conceive and expand her family.”
The patient had been suffering from this medical condition which was affecting other surrounding organs for a decade, but had left it untreated as she was strongly against having her uterus removed. Aside from affecting the size of her abdomen, the patient was suffering from pain, constipation, frequent urination, heavy menstrual bleeding and infertility.
Commenting on the technique used to treat this specific case Dr. Attia said: “After a set of control and precautionary measures were put in place against the potential complications that may arise from this condition, the patient underwent a 45 minute surgery to remove the fibroid. The surgery was performed through a horizontal 6cm incision in the lower abdomen as opposed to having a 20cm longitudinal scar.
“In order to avoid bleeding during surgery which could result in an emergency hysterectomy, the surgical plan included two important bleeding control techniques. Firstly, making incisions in a parallel manner to the blood vessels instead of perpendicular and secondly, the temporary bilateral clamping of the uterine arteries during surgery in an effort to reduce intraoperative blood loss.”
The surgery was performed successfully without the need for blood transfusion due to the effective control measures that were taken prior and during the surgery, which prevented severe blood loss.
The patient was discharged from the hospital two days after surgery in a good condition and her symptoms have fully resolved.
