Abu Dhabi, UAE – The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), the entity responsible for developing quality infrastructure in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, hosted a meeting of its Standing Technical Committee (STC) for Q3 2017.

During the meeting, members of the STC reviewed and endorsed technical documents submitted by their working groups. Furthermore, they discussed the progress achieved by the Council’s Standardisation Services department.

Responsible for harmonisation of technical standards in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, the STC comprises delegates from various Abu Dhabi government entities as well as federal authorities. Institutions represented include Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, Department of Health, Monitoring and Control Centre, Regulation and Supervision Bureau, Abu Dhabi Occupational Safety and Health Center, Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company, Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services Centre, United Arab Emirates University, Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities, The Center of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, Department of Culture and Tourism, Department of Economic Development, General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, General Directorate of Civil Defense Abu Dhabi, ADNOC Distribution, and Industrial Development Bureau.

Engineer Abdullah Hassan Al Muaini, Executive Director of Conformity Scheme Services at QCC, said: “QCC convenes regular meetings of the STC to review the progress of standardisation projects and discuss suggestions made by the working groups. These meetings demonstrate our commitment to adopting unified standards that accelerate sustainable development and support the UAE's ambition to be counted among the top five governments in the world.”

He added: “Harmonisation of standards across all sectors allows individual entities in the emirate to understand and apply standards in a consistent and uniform manner. This, in turn, enhances the clarity and inclusiveness of the standards, facilitates more effective regulation across various sectors and industries, and guarantees equal opportunities for all.”

Among the documents reviewed at the meeting were Abu Dhabi green school manual that aim to drive environmental awareness and responsibility among students, and enhance educators’ environmental knowledge. Aligned with the UAE's leading global efforts to embed sustainability in general and higher education sectors, the document defines the roles of all members of school communities in promoting sustainable use of natural resources.

Also on the agenda were environmental specifications for soil contamination, developed by representatives of several government entities involved in the protection of the environment at the local and federal level, that regulate the use of land and soil. The need for these standards was spurred by the rapid development Abu Dhabi witnessed in the past decades that has brought about indiscriminate disposal of solid and liquid waste, leading to the deterioration of soil quality.

Furthermore, the meeting endorsed the professional standards for automotive workshop personnel developed by the steering committee on the future vision for Mussafah. Following a thorough review of the current status of the sector, the document outlines the general requirements and performance guidelines for technical and support professions in car repair and maintenance.

Last up for review were the emission standards for industrial sectors with a focus on the asphalt and concrete industries.

The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council was established in 2009 to raise the quality of the emirate’s exports and locally traded products while protecting the interests of consumers and supporting the UAE’s competitive economy. QCC empowers regulators to establish and implement product safety, legal metrology and conformity schemes. The Council also sets guidelines and benchmarks to verify that products manufactured and traded in Abu Dhabi conform to the highest quality standards.
