The Bahrain Ministry of Works is expected to award the main works contract for its $85 million the Al Fateh Highway upgrade project in the third quarter of 2020, according to a source close to the project.

"The main contract award is expected to be in 16 August 2020," the source said, adding that the tender was issued on 8 September 2019.

The project is scheduled for completion in December 2022, a second source said.

Only three companies out of the six companies participating in the tender have submitted commercial bids for the project, according to a Tender Board announcement in July 2020. These include Nass Contracting ($78.6 million and $73.6 million); Alghanim International General Trading & Contracting ($79 million) and GEK Terna ($112 million and $111 million).

The scope of work, according to the tender documents, includes construction of a 600 metre (m) three-lane underpass at Gulf hotel junction; a 370m left turn two-lane bridge at Shaikh Daij junction from Al Fateh highway to Prince Saud Al Faisal highway; a 125m single lane U-turn bridge between Shaikh Daij junction and Manama causeway; 4-kilometres widening and reconstruction of Al Fateh highway to five lanes; three-foot bridges, two utility tunnels under the U-turn bridge embankment; installation of street lights, safety barriers, traffic signals, storm drainage systems and associated facilities.

Parsons International has been mandated as design, infrastructure and project management consultant for the project, the first source said.

The project is being funded by Saudi Fund for Development.
