Spanish infrastructure company Acciona has been awarded the main contract for a 570,000 cubic metres per day (m3/day) Jubail 3B Independent Water Plant (IWP) in Saudi Arabia.

The company announced the €337 million ($400 million) contract award in its first half 2021 results statement issued on 29 July.

"During the first half, the company was awarded new contracts worth €4.65 billion, of which €2.36 billion corresponded to Construction and Water projects. The main contracts include the Jubail 3B desalination plant in Saudi Arabia (€337 million), the Playa Carmen-Tulum stretch of the Mayan Railway in Mexico (€315 million), the upgrade of the Frankston railway line in Melbourne, Australia (€213 million) and various projects in Poland (€249 million)," Acciona said.

UAE-based news portal Energy & Utilities said on Tuesday that Acciona will carry out the construction work in consortium with China’s Sepco III.

A consortium of Sepco III and Spain’s Abengoa is executing the construction contract for the 600,000 m3/day Jubail 3A desalination plant.

In June, Zawya Projects had reported the signing of project agreements for the Jubail 3B Independent Water Plant (IWP) between Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) and the winning consortium of Engie, Nesma and Ajlan.

The project, based on Reverse Osmosis desalination technology, is expected to cost $695 million, according to the report.

Jubail 3B also includes a reservoir with a storage capacity equivalent to a day's production and solar power systems to reduce grid electricity consumption.
