The University of South Wales (USW), an esteemed higher education institution in the UK and the UAE, and Falcon Aviation, a key player in the aviation industry of the UAE and the MENA region, have announced their intention to establish a strategic partnership that will facilitate an integrated university-industry approach to the training and development of aircraft maintenance engineers at the MEBAA Show 2018. A  Heads of Terms, incorporating a milestone programme, was signed which sets out the expectations of the partnership to meet both organisations’ strategic intentions and industrial expectations, and a timeline for establishing the partnership.

USW is the only university in the UK that has integrated the industry-standard aircraft maintenance qualification EASA Part-66 Cat B with a Bachelor of Science Honours degree, delivered on a single campus. The institution recently opened its new KHDA/EASA/GCAA approved campus at Dubai South, in the presence of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, offering a range of aviation engineering programmes.

As part of the integrated approach, USW students will receive the required On-the-Job Training (OJT) from Falcon’s qualified personnel, and gain experience in the workplace alongside their academic studies, in order to become competent professionals and licensed aircraft maintenance engineers. “We are pleased to welcome the USW, and their students in our state-of-the-art maintenance facilities in Dubai World Central (DWC) in Dubai and Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi”, said Nicolas Tejera Director of Maintenance of Falcon Aviation.

The milestone programme proposes that Falcon will support USW to extend approved training capabilities; notably the rotor wing market that will benefit both Falcon Aviation and other commercial partners. “We will work collaboratively to develop further education and training programmes to support the growth in demand in the UAE and the MENA region with specialised courses tailored to the industry needs” said Panagiotis Vasilopoulos, Technical Training Manager of Falcon Aviation.

This strategic partnership aims to support the industry in overcoming the shortage of aircraft maintenance engineers in the region, both in number and quality, with the highest commitment of the partners to continue the long history of excellence, both in education and aviation technology.

Dr Akram Hammoudeh, USW Dubai Campus Director, said: “Today’s signing is a significant milestone for USW as we continue to establish our presence in the UAE.  Working closely with industry is a defining characteristic of the University; our strategic partnership with Falcon Aviation will facilitate an integrated university-industry approach to educating and training the next generation of employment ready aircraft maintenance engineers, a model that has worked successfully at our home-UK campus for over a decade.”
