Facebook is expediting the release of a new app that will go head to head with the Chinese social media giant TikTok .

The iOS app called Collab is now currently being tested and is available to users in select countries on an invite-only basis.

It lets people work together to “create, watch, and mix and match” short music videos, the tech platform’s New Product Experimentation (NPE) team announced in a note.

NPE said the release of the app is being stepped up, in light of so many people staying at home around the world.

“Music is one of the most powerful creative outlets. With Collab, we’re leveraging technology to help people unlock creative superpowers by collaborating on original music videos from anywhere,” the social media giant said.

Like the Chinese video-sharing app, Collab users can publish their music videos for others to watch on Instagram, Facebook or any other platform. Users can create their own arrangement by adding in their own recording or by swiping and discovering an arrangement to complete their composition.

The tool is open to anyone. “No musical experience is required,” Facebook said.

Unlike TikTok, however, three people can sync their clips simultaneously, allowing users to mix and match their work further.

The tool has been opened for use among consumers in the United States and Canada, and it is not clear yet when it will be available in the Middle East region.

Consumers in the UAE are among the most active social media users in the world, thanks to high internet connectivity and increasing adoption of mobile devices. Emiratis, on average, spend nearly three hours on social media daily.

“The large scale rise in the adoption of social media can be attributed to the easy availability of super-fast internet at very low prices,” Global Media Insight said.
