New strain behind spike in infections in Bahrain

The community was urged once again to adhere to precautionary measures in place to combat Covid-19 as the recent spike in cases has been attributed to a new and more infectious Covid-19 variant.

Salmaniya Medical Complex infectious and internal diseases consultant Dr Jameela Salman revealed that the elderly and those with compromised immunity were more vulnerable to the new variant.

She was speaking at a Press conference held yesterday at the Crown Prince Centre for Training and Medical Research where she renewed the call for more ‘individual and community responsibility’.

“The new variant has a much higher transmission rate compared with the virus first discovered in 2019, and this requires full and strict adherence to precautionary measures,” she said.

“The symptoms of the new variant are similar to Covid-19 and seasonal flu. So refrain from self-diagnosis and call 444 for instructions.”

She stressed the importance of staying away from the elderly, people with compromised immunities and chronic illnesses.

“People with chronic illnesses who get infected with Covid-19 exhibit mild symptoms initially, however it could soon turn severe leading to them requiring intensive care.

“We want to end this pandemic and we must come together as a community.

“It is critical to wash hands and clean surfaces, refrain from gatherings and maintain social distancing while also registering for the vaccine.”
