Be the candle in darkness, Ali bin Tamim tells AMF delegates

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – 1 May 2017

The Arab civilization is one of the richest in the world. The UAE, in particular, is shaped by the culture and traditions that date back to 4000 BC, said Ali bin Tamim, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Media.

Speaking on 'Forgotten Legacy of Arab Civilization' at the Arab Media Forum on Monday, he said there are several factors that contribute to this. With the onslaught of development, people often tend to forget the great past that they inherited. Political and social transformations have resulted in the current generation forgetting the magnanimity of their heritage.

Tamim said, "His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in his book 'Reflections on Happiness', urges people to be positive when addressing challenges.

Forefront of Renaissance

The Arab World, for instance, was at the forefront of Science Renaissance, recollected Tamim.  "We made great strides in various disciplines of medicine, philosophy and astronomy, and we can boast of stalwarts such as Al Kindi and Ibn Al Haytham among others whose names we can proudly take among the best scientists in the world."

It is heart-warming to note that the Arab World has a shared heritage and shared humanity, he said and added that only optimism will help sustain the current and future generations.

"We cannot forget our identity. Our legacy is our identity. As Socrates said, 'Science cannot be taught. It can only be discovered by dialogue', so also Arab legacy can be retraced and appreciated in its glory only by communication and dialogues, undertaken in utmost confidence and optimism," believes Tamim.

"Let us be the candle in the darkness', he urged but cautioned that "while we remember our grandfathers and their status, we should never feel inferior to them.

“We need to continue being ambitious and develop and execute innovative plans and strive for excellence," Ali bin Tamim added.
