Projects to reconstruct war-devastated Mosul city in North Iraq could be completed within five years, an official was quoted on Monday as saying.

The Supreme Committee for the Reconstruction of Mosul, which is headed by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, has devised a database for reconstruction projects in the city and has initially allocated 382 billion Iraqi dinars ($260 million) for such projects, the Committee’s executive director Abdul Qadir Dakheel said.

“We need around five years to complete rebuilding projects and restore the city to what it was before the war,” he told the official daily Alsabah.

Dakheel said key reconstruction projects in Mosul comprise restoration of more than 270 war-damaged historical sites, rebuilding of schools, hospitals and houses, and rehabilitation of the city’s international airport.

Iraqi officials said in 2019 that the country needs at least $100 billion for reconstruction, including nearly half the sum for Mosul.
