MANAMA: A beach in Muharraq has been shut down and more fines imposed as Bahrain continued its tough crackdown on Covid-19 violators.

Muharraq Police co-ordinated the closure of the beach in Amwaj with the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry.

The shutdown comes as the Health Ministry said one more person died of the coronavirus, alongside 287 new cases being registered and 238 recoveries.

A Bahraini woman, 83, died yesterday, taking the total deaths to 355.

Of the new cases, 152 were expat workers, 121 new cases of local contacts and 14 travel-related.

An additional 238 people recovered, taking the total to 92,113.

Of the 2,849 active cases, 43 are receiving treatment and 12 are in critical condition, the Health Ministry said.

Bahrain has so far registered 95,317 cases, including active cases, recoveries and deaths. Bahrain has conducted 2,463,161 tests.

The Lower Criminal Court, meanwhile, imposed fines of between BD1,000 and BD2,000 on two restaurant officials for flouting the precautionary measures, the Ministries and Public Entities Prosecution said.

The restaurant has been shut down.

The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry separately said it registered 2,444 violations last year, up by 141pc compared with 1,728 in 2019.

Under-Secretary for Municipal Affairs Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said that the Muharraq Municipality topped the list with 834 violations; followed by Northern, 736; Southern, 473 and Manama 391.
