Dubai, UAE – IEC Telecom, one of the leading global providers of managed network communication solutions, along with Inmarsat, a pioneer of mobile satellite communications today announced that they would host a joint panel discussion at Seatrade Maritime Middle East on October 29th, 2018 from 12 noon – 1.30 pm at Breakout Theatre, Hall 6 of Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), Dubai.

Titled ‘Navigating Connectivity While at Sea’ and led by industry experts Drew Brandy, Senior Vice President Market Strategy, Inmarsat Maritime; Nabil Ben Soussia, Managing Director, IEC Telecom Middle East and Gürkan Büyüktelli, Marine Superintendent, Mercan Group, the panel discussion will cover the importance of connectivity in order to be able to retain crew and drive overall business productivity.

Commenting on the same, Nabil Ben Soussia, Managing Director, IEC Telecom Middle East said, “Connectivity is about more than just email, web-surfing or logging on to social media. It is also closely linked to safety, training, and continuing professional development. With more than 50,000 ships crossing the oceans daily, it is also the channel through which business efficiency and productivity goals are achieved. Therefore, customers need to strike the right balance between the crew welfare, corporate goals for operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness; we hope to provide insights on these matters through productive discussions at Seatrade Maritime event.”

Drawing on key findings of a new Royal Holloway University London study commissioned by Inmarsat and the Sailors’ Society, Mr. Brandy said, “By putting researchers on working ships and talking to seafarers during their daily lives, our unique study has teased out how the availability of communications tools affects crew behaviour and, by extension, self-esteem, well-being and even productivity.”

Capt. Büyüktelli, of recruitment network Mercan Group is expected to highlight the benefits unlimited internet access can bring to ship management.

Maritime connectivity is an area that is ripe for development and expansion. On a daily basis, thousands of merchant ships cross the oceans with millions of cargo containers in tow, signaling the need for fast and efficient communications aboard vessels and between land and sea. While the ability to connect is becoming a default setting and a prerequisite to function in daily life, it is also directly responsible for the business efficiency and productivity. And therefore, it is essential that all segments, including bulk carriers, container ships, cargo, tankers, FPSOs, fishing vessels, cruise ships and yachting and leisure are covered. This includes issues relating to network flexibility, budgets, crew welfare and remote management and support.

There are no longer any fundamental technological or financial barriers in the way of decent connectivity at sea, and the advances which have propelled the networked economy on land are now fully available to the maritime sector via satellite.
