Ten proposals were approved by MPs during Parliament’s weekly session yesterday.

They are:

Raise the monthly electricity usage cap without moving to the higher category from 3,000 to 6,000 units in the first slab and 6,001 to 7,000 units in the second, during June, July and August every year. (The Electricity and Water Affairs Ministry said the cost of electricity subsidy in 2018 was BD118.7 million, out of which BD90.13m went to the first category, and would just encourage more usage putting pressure on gas resources, incurring more costs with the service provided by the private sector and opening the floodgates for consumption and, in return, maintenance and restoration, while reducing vital revenues).

Building a mosque in Amwaj Islands. (The Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry said a temporary cabin has been set up in the location for prayers and a new mosque would be built in an adjacent area as part of a new government housing project).

Establishing a support centre for inventors. (This is backed by the Bahraini Researchers and Inventors Society).

Banning trucks and heavy vehicles on main roads during peak hours and looking into the possibility of expanding it. (Backed by the General Directorate of Traffic).

Establishing a new comprehensive centre for citizenship, passports and residency affairs. (The Interior Ministry said it was working to offer such services online, but would give a thorough reply on the proposal following submission to the Cabinet).

Building a new technical and vocational institute or school for girls in Hamad Town. (The Education Ministry said the proposal was unnecessary as it has already introduced technical and vocational courses in secondary schools for girls including Hamad Town).

Developing the Riffa Public Library.

Having citizenship books include concepts related to MPs’ role and Parliament’s legislative and monitoring duties. (The Education Ministry said such a request was already included in course books for grade seven and nine).

A clampdown on expatriate street vendors and taking the necessary legal action against them while implementing measures to ensure that they are not present at all places including markets, roads and outside worship places. (The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry said that such work was already being done with authorities concerned).

Constructing a new jetty for fishermen in West Eker. (The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry said spaces could be provided at Bandar Al Dar and Qeraya Jetties in Sitra, but a new jetty cannot be built at the moment due to budget constraints).
