Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre organises International Translation Conference with Leibniz Institute of European History

Part of a series of cultural events organised by Arabic Language Centre’s ‘Kalima’ Project for Translation

Abu Dhabi – The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), part of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, is set to organise the eighth annual Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference in collaboration with the Leibniz Institute of European History, at the Institute’s headquarters in Mainz, Germany. This marks the first time the event has been held outside of the emirate.

Taking place on 18 October, in the lead-up to the Centre’s debut appearance at the Frankfurt International Book Fair (20 – 24 October), the Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference 2021 will be held under the theme ‘Arabic Language and Cultural Communication: Literary Translation and the Impact of Cultural and Historical Specificities’. The conference is one of a series of cultural events organised by ALC’s ‘Kalima’ Project for Translation as part of its participation at the Frankfurt fair.

The conference brings together distinguished academics to address important issues concerning the translation of Arabic into German, delving into the translation of novels, children’s literature, films, and scientific materials. Topics will also cover methods of conveying images and texts – particularly relating to heritage, poetry, and prose – as well as the impact of history and culture on translation.

The event will be attended by researchers and translators from the UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Egypt, as well as Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and the United States. It presents an opportunity to discuss translated works and discover new publications, offering a platform for in-depth research into the various categories of translation. The conference will be conducted in Arabic, German, and English.

Holding our annual conference abroad this year will allow us to welcome a wider range of participants and expand our cooperation with universities and academic institutions, as well as gain insight into the literary and linguistic scene in Germany.”

With a focus on the Arabic language as well as cultural communication, this year’s Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference will promote Emirati literature and advances the ALC have made in the field of translation. In parallel, ALC also aims to attract and recruit talented translators for its ‘Kalima’ Project for Translation, to enhance its international reputation and forge new connections with publishing houses and academic institutions in Europe, particularly Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference was launched in 2012 to take place alongside the annual Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. The conference covers any and all topics concerning the field of translation, both from and into Arabic, highlighting the challenges faced and working to boost translation efforts across the region. The conference has played a major role in supporting and promoting the ‘Kalima’ Project for Translation as a leading platform for the transfer of knowledge from around the world to Arab readers.
