Abu Dhabi City Municipality – The Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM) is planning to plant a massive number of date trees in Abu Dhabi Island to enhance the urban appearance and at the same time uplift the environmental and sustainability standards of the city.

The City Municipal Center has unveiled a plan to plant date trees in certain parts of Abu Dhabi Island to enhance the appearance of Abu Dhabi metropolis as a civilised destination of the UAE. It has identified the areas to be planted with date trees including parts of main roads and vial corridors in Abu Dhabi Island.

Besides its aesthetic and environmental objectives, the Project also aims to fill the gap between date trees, which were lost due to natural elements such as thunderstorms. The Municipality had fixed the best types of date trees; which promises to be a genuine addition to the gorgeous addition of landscaping works.

The Municipality is keen to enhance this project through installing decorative lighting system underneath palm trees in certain selected areas to upgrade the urban outlook and add a beautiful component to Abu Dhabi city.

Planting date trees, in particular, has symbolic importance as date trees are icons of the identity of the UAE in general and Abu Dhabi in particular. The Municipality is targeting to plan more than 1500 date trees in areas including the intersection of the Arab Gulf Street and Shakhbout Street leading to Al Hudairyat Island; the new tourist landmark of the capital city Abu Dhabi. Places also include the median of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Street leading Yas Island through Al Jubail Island and Fahid Island. Additionally, the project covers a part of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street at the entrance of Abu Dhabi and other areas at Al Bateen, Sheikh Zayed Street, and First Sultan bin Zayed Street. Works in the project will start with the beginning of the agricultural season in October each year where temperature drops and the weather will be fine for transporting and planting date trees.

In the context, the Municipality is continuing with programmes aimed at improving the landscaped areas of some sandy spots in Abu Dhabi Island through growing ornamental plants and shade trees. Works also include pavements in line with the highest international standards.

The project stems from the keenness of the Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities to provide open landscaped areas and spreading the greens; which will reflect positively on the standard of living of community members.
