Iraq has allocated 35 billion Iraqi dinars ($24 million) from the state budget for reconstruction projects in the Northern Mosul City, which took the brunt of war devastation in the Arab country a few years ago, the official daily Alsabah said on Wednesday.

The sum is the latest in a series of budget disbursements for the reconstruction of the historic city, the capital of the Northern Nineveh Governorate, the paper said.

“We have received 35 billion dinars from this year’s budget allocations for rebuilding projects in Mosul…..we are pushing ahead with the reconstruction programme in the city and other parts of Nineveh,” said Abdul Qadir Al-Dakheel, Director of the Supreme Committee for the Reconstruction of Mosul, which was formed this year by Prime Minister Musatafa Al-Kadhimi.

According to Mohammed Al-Ani, Chairman of the Reconstruction Fund for Areas Affected by Terrorist Operations, 129 of 169 rebuilding projects in the city’s infrastructure have been completed over the past four years.

“There will be large budget allocations this year for reconstruction projects in Mosul, which suffered severely in the war,” he said.

In 2019, Iraqi officials estimated at least $100 billion is need for reconstruction, including more than $50 billion in Mosul alone.
