SODIC has celebrated the official opening of Tawasol’s new Community School in the heart of the impoverished neighbourhood of Istabl Antar, located in the Cairo slum area of Ezbet Khairallah.
The school is Tawasol’s second in the neighbourhood, having established the first in 2008 to cater to children who had escaped traditional schooling. The project aims to help them re-enrol in the education system, and to learn skills.
Tawasol’s first school provides Ministry of Education certified learning, along with vocational training and an expanded performing arts programme,
Built over an area of 1,050 sqm, the school, which has been finished and equipped to international educational standards, has the capacity to host over 500 students. The new school will provide a larger group of students with the same multi-disciplinary experience in a much healthier and well equipped environment.
Facilities include a science laboratory, theatre, library, gym, food court, medical clinics, and auditorium, among many others.
The school will also serve as a community hub, offering health services that include free weekly checkups and funding programmes for students and neighbouring community members.
“We have been working with Tawasol for over 10 years, we have watched the community school grow,” said Magued Sherif, Managing Director at SODIC, “We were there when this land was bought, as well as at every step on this long journey to this day, this school is a dream come true for SODIC as well.”
He added, “Education is one of our strongest corporate citizenship platforms, and we are both very proud of Tawasol and privileged to have played a small part in this big victory for the community of Ezbet Khairallah.”
The opening was attended by Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said; Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal, and Tawasol Co-Founder Mohamed Abou Youssef.
