More than 3,300 face mask violations have been registered over the last 10 days even as the country witnesses a surge in Covid-19 cases.

A total of 615 infections were reported last night, up from 89 on December 19 when the country moved into the Yellow Alert level .

Public Security operations head Major Mohammed Al Awadhi appealed to citizens and residents not to drop their guard.

“A total of 3,322 face mask violations were registered in 11 days with 65 measures taken in order to achieve social distancing,” Major Al Awadhi said.

“We are going through a stage that requires everyone to double commitment and caution. All recommendations issued by the National Taskforce for Combating Covid-19 must be implemented to preserve the health and safety of the community,” he said on the Interior Ministry’s weekly Al Amn (Security) radio show.

“We are also intensifying mobile and foot security patrols at all events and key public areas and taking the necessary legal measures against violators,” he said.

Meanwhile, nine restaurants have been closed in the Capital Governorate as part of a nationwide crackdown on businesses violating Covid-19 restrictions, the Health Ministry announced yesterday. Its inspectors conducted 261 visits on Friday, during which 41 establishments were identified for breaching guidelines.
