A new walkway featuring outdoor exercise equipment and solar-operated lamp-posts will be constructed in Umm Al Hassam.
The project in Block 373 is part of a plan by the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry to increase green spaces across the nation.
A tender worth almost BD134,000 for the construction of the walkway has been awarded to Saraya Contractors.
“The BD134,000 project will come up on the Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway on the waterfront of Umm Al Hassam,” the ministry’s Municipalities Affairs Under-Secretary Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said.
“The walkway will be 1,421 metres long and five metres wide while the entire project, measuring a total of 10,127sqm, will include 1,520m of artificial green spaces.
“Trees will also be planted along the highway, while the project will also feature 20 outdoor fitness facilities as well as 40 park benches and solar-operated lamp-posts.”
The project is being closely followed by Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf in co-operation with the Capital Trustees Authority.
Shaikh Mohammed said the waterfront project will serve residents from the block and surrounding areas, and is in line with achieving the strategic goals of the 2030 Economic Vision.
“The ministry has spared no effort in incorporating solar energy in many of its recent projects, such as walkways and some gardens, as well as a cooling system which has already been implemented at some walkways,” said the ministry’s shared municipal services assistant under-secretary Shawqiya Humaidan.
“This is all part of the ministry’s strategy to improve and revamp these facilities and services while taking into account the weather and people’s needs.“
It is critical to prepare and provide the appropriate infrastructure to allow citizens and residents to enjoy a safe environment and a healthy lifestyle by encouraging various exercises.”
According to Ms Humaidan, as part of the ministry’s strategy more than 20 walkways have been developed – some on waterfronts – while also providing most of the large gardens with walkways.
She also highlighted that plans are underway to implement a comprehensive revamp and maintenance plan for many walkways, public parks and facilities.
“The ministry’s plan in the next phase includes developing walkways and turning some of them into rubber walkways – a flexible, pervious rubber sidewalk system that provides a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution – while also increasing the green spaces,” she added.
“There will be a focus on planting trees for shade as well as environmentally-friendly trees and expansion plans to include outdoor exercise equipment, children’s play areas as well as increase public facilities at these walkways.“
There are also plans to collaborate with the private sector in the future for development work.”
