It is an idyllic scene at the Khorfakkan beach – a couple sit in the sun outside the Medellin Café sipping on a coffee, while their children are playing joyfully in the children’s play area. A short stretch away is the azure beach where a few people are stretched out on lounge chairs, sunning themselves. A game of football is in progress at a court right across, while a group of kids holding balloons flock around six food trucks in a designated area.

No, this is not a weekend snapshot – you can expect to witness such a scene on any day of the week at the Khorfakkan Beach destination, developed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq).

Inaugurated in December 2019 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Khorfakkan Beach is a first-of-its-kind largescale redevelopment and redesigning enterprise in the Eastern region of the emirate, developed with the support of a host of public entities in Sharjah.

The eastern region’s first fully-serviced beach front destination has given residents as well as visitors access to a multitude of sports and leisure activities that were not there before – all days of the week.

In the process, it has driven up Shurooq’s growing influence in redefining experiences across various business fronts across Sharjah, representing a prominent milestone in the authority’s journey to developing world-class tourism destination and hospitality properties across every corner in Sharjah.

Among the exciting leisure and entertainment facilities in this ambitious beachfront destination that are already operational are sports amenities built to international standards. They include two basketball courts, two volleyball courts (one beach volleyball and the other a regular volleyball court), three football courts – one 35X30 metres and two 20X20 metres, and two 1 km tracks, one for running and the other a skateboard and cycling track.

Five of the 17 proposed F&B and retail outlets – Medellín Café, Baskin Robbins, Konafa and Tea, Babu, and Chocolicious restaurant and café – are already operational, complemented by six food trucks - with their own power and water outlets - offering a variety of cuisines. There are two cordoned-off play areas built to global safety standards, with fun activities for children aged 4 - 12 years

The beach is fully serviced with three changing areas that include showers and up to 30 lockers in each. Lifeguards appointed by Shurooq man the 1-km stretch of beach, working round the clock to ensure the safety of beach goers.

The Beach has provided 350 paid parking spaces for cars, in addition to valet parking for VIPs and a charging station for electric cars. Ticketing kiosks service visitors and tourists who are interested in accessing/booking any of the sports courts, or to gain access to the children’s play area.

Taking centre stage at the development is a square that is earmarked for major events and festivals held in the city, and can also be utilised for organising promotions, activations, product launches or flea markets.

Speaking about the new tourism destination, Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, COO of Shurooq, said: “The Khorfakkan Beach is in line with Shurooq’s commitment to redefine leisure and lifestyle experiences by developing world-class destinations that offer distinctive features and services in partnership with local and global businesses. This development is also an important addition to the emirate’s tourism sector due to its strategic location close to the port where cruise ships dock from around the world, and near the newly developed heritage area, which is one of the important sightseeing attractions in the city.”

He added: "Sustainable and targeted expansion is driving greater interest in the East Coast from a travel perspective. Khorfakkan, in particular, is proving increasingly attractive as a leisure tourism destination. In many ways, this is not surprising, particularly considering Khorfakkan's natural beauty and unspoiled coastline, its cultural and historical heritage as well as its relative proximity to Sharjah. This redevelopment tourism destination is our attempt at transforming a part of its beachfront into a haven not just for tourists, but for residents too, with every sports, leisure and entertainment amenity at their doorstep.”
