Sharjah: During her participation at an event about women in leading roles, Manal Ataya, director-general of Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA) highlighted the country’s efforts in empowering women and helping them fulfil their aspirations.

She pointed out that UAE invests in its people regardless of gender, and stressed that Emirati women have always played an active part in decision making and many of them have contributed to the development of their country. 

Taking part in the Arab Women in Leadership and Business Summit in Dubai held on 5 and 6 February, Ataya’s remarks as a panelist in a session titled “Leadership Progression Pathway Weaved Through the Insights of Accomplished Women Leaders”, pinpointed main elements that help women assume their roles in community. 

“Determination, focus and challenging oneself, are elements to success. Women should not be discouraged by obstacles that come along the way, but instead must push themselves and reveal their true potentials in order to become who they aspire to become”, Ataya said. 

As a real-life exemplar who paved the way for her peers in the field of museology and being of the youngest female director-generals ever appointed in Sharjah government, Ataya in her role running SMA, has launched an initiative to professionally develop SMA’s female employees into management roles. 

“Women make up the majority among our 635 staff members at SMA, with an increasing number of them in senior roles,” she said. 

Ataya also highlighted SMA’s Reyadah annual program launched three years ago to develop leadership skills within the organisation. 

Ataya emphasised women’s need to better learn how to negotiate for themselves, and urged them to add empathy and communication building skills that will help them become more effective leaders.

With women representing a third of the total number of government employees, one half of the National Council and a third of country’s ministers, the two-day event which featured question and answer sessions, interactive panel discussions and collaborative roundtables, examined the active role women play in leadership in both the private and public sectors.
