Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Dubai Press Club (DPC) today announced the winners of the ‘Investigative Journalism Competition’ at a ceremony held on the last day of the 18th Arab Media Forum (AMF). The competition, which targeted high school students in the UAE, was organised by the American University in Dubai (AUD) in association with DPC and the UAE Ministry of Education.

The first-place winners in the English and Arabic categories of the competition were awarded with full scholarships to pursue their media studies at AUD’s Mohammed Bin Rashid School for Communication (MBRSC).

The award ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Mona Al Marri, President of Dubai Press Club (DPC) and Chairperson of AMF’s Organising Committee, Ali Jaber, Dean of MBRSC, Dr. Imad Hoballah, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at AUD and a number of media personalities and guests.

Her Excellency Mona Al Marri, President of Dubai Press Club (DPC) said: “DPC’s collaboration with the Mohammed Bin Rashid School for Communication to organise this competition for high school students reflects our objective of encouraging youth to pursue careers in media, as well as unearthing and fostering promising talent. Competitions such as this serve as a starting point for identifying youth who have the talent to be successful in the media and encouraging them to acquire new skills and expertise that can equip them for success in this field. She also said that honouring the winning students at AMF reflects DPC’s keenness to launch unique new initiatives that can promote young talent, which is essential to help develop a robust media industry in the UAE and the Arab world.”

Ali Jaber, Dean of MBRSC, expressed his appreciation for the support extended by all the sponsors to the competition and their contributions to its success. Jaber said the competition was launched to grant scholarships to talented high school students with a passion for journalism, so that they can pursue media studies. He added that the media programme at AUD would nurture their skills and ensure they are very well prepared for a career in journalism. He also pointed out the key role of such competitions in motivating school students to pursue a career in journalism.

Winners

Investigative Journalism Competition (Arabic Category)

The first place winner in the Arabic category of the ‘Investigative Journalism Competition’ was Hala Najeeb Al Hamami from Al Rashid Al Saleh Private School in Dubai. Other students honoured in this category included: Amal Al Ghoori, from Dubai International School, Youmna Yasser Mustafa, from the Islamic Educational Private School in Ras Al Khaimah, Maitha Al Dahmani, from Al-Asma Bint Al-Harith School in Ras Al Khaimah, Latifah Abdullah, from Al Salam School, Angi Osama Mahmoud, from Qatr Al Nahda School in Al Dhafra, and Mohammed Abdullah Rashed from Hamad bin Abdullah Al Sharqi School in Fujairah.

Investigative Journalism Competition (English Category)

Meanwhile, Hamda Ibrahim Tamimi, who attends Asma Bint Al Nouman School, and Mariam Al Bastaki, from Asma Bint Al Nouman School, were both named first place winners in the English category of the journalism competition.

Short-Film Category

Winning first place in the best short film category was Mohammed Al Thenhani from Hamad Bin Abdullah Al Sharqi School, who also walked away with a scholarship to study at MBRSC. Other students honoured in this category received complimentary gifts from the competition’s organising partners. These students included: Ali Ameen from Dubai International School, Hind Belhamar from Asma Bint Al Nouman Schoool and Rawan Awad from Dibba School.

Held under the theme ‘Arab Media: From Now to the Future’, Arab Media Forum, the region’s leading annual event for the media industry drew the participation of more than 3,000 prominent regional and international media leaders, scholars, writers and experts, who shared their views on the current state of the Arab media and the shifts that are shaping the future of the industry.
