DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), a leading innovator in enterprise software, today announced that leading analyst firm IDC has ranked VMware No. 1 in market share in both worldwide cloud systems management (1) and IT automation and configuration management software (2) based on 2017 revenues. Customers helped VMware top the cloud systems management category for the fifth straight year while leading the new automation and configuration management category for the first time.

“IDC’s market share reports are a validation of our focus to deliver a robust cloud management platform to help customers achieve better business outcomes,” said Ajay Singh, senior vice president and general manager, Cloud Management Business Unit, VMware. “With support from our customers, we have been able to outperform and continue to lead both cloud systems management and IT automation management software categories. We continue our work with our customers to meet their changing automation and cloud management needs.”

Ranked No. 1 in Cloud Systems Management
According to the IDC report, “Worldwide Cloud Systems Management Software Market Shares, 2017: Strong Growth Continues,” VMware’s market share grew to 21.7 percent, seven-plus percentage points ahead of the No. 2 ranked vendor. The report recognized VMware’s ongoing efforts to offer customers a unified approach to cloud management monitoring, analytics, and automation.

The report states, “As many enterprises have opted to build private clouds using VMware technology, the company's management offerings have been widely deployed into cloud environments. At VMworld 2018 customer events, VMware introduced a series of new products that demonstrate the company's commitment to evolving its portfolio to support the needs of multicloud enterprise strategies, including updates to vRealize Suite.” The report adds: “As part of a transition to hybrid cloud and multicloud, customers are shifting priorities away from simply automating cloud provisioning and self-service and putting greater emphasis on application performance, infrastructure capacity, automation, cost optimization, configuration compliance, and integrated service management workflows.”

Leader in Enabling Faster Business Outcomes with Automation
The IDC report, “Worldwide IT Automation and Configuration Management Software Market Shares, 2017: Hybrid IT Drives Growth,” outlined VMware’s leadership with 18.6 percent market share in 2017. According to the report, as industry focus pivots away from traditional workload management toward the automation of infrastructure, VMware continues to take a strategic focus on its management portfolio, spreading R&D investments across core management suites such as VMware vRealize Suite that enable a lower TCO for its products across the data center, desktop, networking, security, telecom, and storage.

The IDC report notes that, “IT executives continue to invest in automation across infrastructure and operations and development teams. Private, hybrid, and public cloud investments, when combined with automation investments, are driving higher ROIs and faster business outcomes."
