University life is an exciting phase for students. This is an important period of transition when one undergoes several tests in order to find the ideal balance between work and play, thus taking a confident step into adulthood and the global workforce.

The UAE is no short international universities that boast a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, excellent facilities and seasoned faculty that are ready to open the doors to your dream career. But there are some essential questions to you need to ask yourself before settling on a university of your choice, whether you're fresh out of high school or an early planner:

What courses does it offer?
The basic of all questions, find out the subjects offered by the university and the specialisation courses it offers. For instance, if your interest is in science, look at degree programmes that offer the most variety. You may have a certain career option in mind, but further down the line, may want to pursue a specialist field. If possible, speak to the staff to find out the level of demand of a certain course. Often, universities tend to cancel a module during a semester due to low number of students, so it's best to clear that doubt before enrolment.

Is it accredited and internationally recognised?
So you've come across few universities that offer exactly what you need to pursue that career, but have you decided where you intend to work after graduation? Keep in mind that some establishments are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) in the UAE, while others are recognised by overseas education bodies. In case you plan on applying for postgraduate courses abroad or want to work in a private organisation, ensure that your degree is internationally recognised. Often, government jobs here happily settle for an MOHESR accreditation.

How long is the commute to campus?
We're no strangers to the morning and evening traffic across the UAE, and there's nothing worse than being late, let alone missing a class. Check the distance of the university from home and decide how you intend to get there - would you go with your own car, opt for the university transport, or use public facilities such as taxi, bus or metro? Let the location (and the cost of travel) also be an essential deciding factor in order to experience a stress-free journey to university.

Does it offer housing facilities?
Let's assume that you're looking at universities in another emirate, because none of the ones nearby appeal to you, or maybe they don't have the programme you desire. In case the commute between cities is too much to handle, choosing student accommodation on campus may be the best option for you. Find out what living arrangements the university can offer - does it have its own dorms, or can it assist you with finding nearby accommodation? Based on that, your next set of questions should be about convenience provided in the area, such as grocery stores, restaurants, laundry, etc.

When was it established and who are the faculty?
The universal rule is to look into universities that have long years of credibility to their name, but it doesn't make newly established international campuses in the UAE any less attractive. Their branches may be new to the emirate, but the quality of education and teaching standards would be on par with its country of origin. As a number of education tours and campaigns take place in the UAE often, make the time to attend one. These reel in faculty and alumni, who are ready to answer your questions. The more informed you are, the better you would feel when making a final decision.

Are there any internships and work opportunities?
hen you look up basic requirements of professional jobs, a good number of organisations expect you to have some form of experience prior to application. This is where your university could give you a major boost if it offers work placements or internships. Check with the university to find out if they offer jobs internally, or collaborate with other organisations for part-time opportunities. You can make the best of the summer holidays gaining work experience. While you're at it, check if the campus has a career counsellor to guide you accordingly.

Does it offer scholarships?
We know that most universities in the UAE offer scholarships, but just how much percentage it takes off the tuition fee differs. Find out the types of scholarships available, amount offered, and what you require for eligibility. Aside from academic excellence, campuses also offer grants for sportspeople, gifted students and those in need of financial assistance. Remember, it is best to select a scholarship before you enrol and you pay the upfront fee, else you may not qualify for it.

Good luck in your future endeavours.
