Some residents in Qatar have begun stockpiling food and supplies after it was announced this morning that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt had cut diplomatic and consular relations with the country.
It was not immediately clear when these measures would be implemented but Saudi Arabia said it would "begin immediate legal measures with friendly, sisterly countries and international companies to implement that measure as quickly as possible for all types of transit from and to the state of Qatar."
Qatar imports around 40 percent of its food supplies through its only land border with Saudi Arabia, according to a report by the BBC.
“People are stockpiling food and supplies here,” a Dubai-based resident visiting Qatar on Monday told Zawya.
The Doha News website also reported that residents had started stockpiling food and supplies.
“I’ve never seen anything like it – people have trolleys full of food and water,” an unnamed resident was quoted as saying.
"It will immediately cause inflation and that will directly affect normal Qatari people," Ghanem Nuseibeh, a director at advisory firm Cornerstone Global, told the BBC.
