Parking meters have been installed on a number of commercial roads across Bahrain to prevent violations, according to the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry.

They are aimed to limit the improper use of parking spaces by a certain group of people all day long, increase the number of spaces and organise parking on roads.

A survey is also underway to ascertain the number of houses overlooking commercial roads so as to provide each house with a licence to occupy a number of parking spaces for free.

Following the installation of parking meters, double parking has ceased and shopkeepers have reported an increase in the number of customers visiting their shops, said a ministry statement.

It pointed out that growing urban development, an increase in investment projects and growing population have led to a surge in registered vehicles with a sharp rise in demand for parking spaces. Studies have been conducted to assess the demand for parking spaces in all the four governorates, close to mosques, community centres and schools.
