Dubai-headquartered international waste and recycling company Averda announced on Tuesday that it has been awarded a new contract to work on the next phase of the Red Sea project in Saudi Arabia.

Under the terms of the contract signed with SEPCOIII, Averda will provide an Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) to sustainably treat waste from residents, employees and visitors to the site. Additionally, it will provide equipment and waste collection vehicles to operate on land and sea across the whole site.

In February, ACWA Power had awarded SEPCOIII an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for Red Sea Utility Assets and Infrastructure project.

Averda had opened the project's 'zero waste to landfill' facility in February 2021.

During the initial construction phase, the waste management services also included the largescale recycling of all building, construction and demolition waste, as well as municipal waste. In the next phase, the focus would on reducing and recovering household and general waste whilst maintaining the policy of ‘zero waste to landfill,’ the statement noted.

Averda said it will provide a new automated Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), an incinerator, a composting system, an electric refuse collection truck (in place of traditional diesel-fuelled vehicle), electric tippers and an electric boat to service the islands.

In addition to recovering compost and recyclable materials, residual ash from the incineration process would be used in the manufacture of bricks by a third party, the statement said, adding that the electricity used to power the electric fleet for waste collection and transportation will be generated by solar panels.

The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) had awarded a three-year solid waste management contract to a joint venture between Averda and Saudi Naval Support Company (SNS) in May 2020.
