RIYADH: During the mid-year school break, which starts at the end of next week, 37 festivals will be taking place throughout the Kingdom, offering activities and events, from heritage and tourism to sports and culture. 

Abdullah bin Abdulmalek Al-Morshed, Vice President of Marketing and Programming at the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH), said the school mid-year festivals are organized this year in coordination with the Tourism Development Council in different regions, as well as the different partners of the commission.

The festivals are expected to reap substantial economic returns due to the increase in the number of local tourists.

He said in recent years the number of festivals has grown substantially thanks to the partnership and cooperation between the private and public sectors, which have been working to promote tourism and cultural activities.

He added that SCTH seeks to improve the quality of and come up with new festivals in the sector, while also developing the private sector and local partners to provide tourism services.

He said SCTH published its development plan for tourism activities in the Kingdom for the period 2014-2018. The campaigns will be carried out to raise awareness about tourism activities and programs in the Kingdom..

Al-Morshed said the festivals scheduled during the upcoming holiday are expected to provide employment for 4,500 young people. They are also expected to be popular among citizens and tourists, especially since 30 percent more activities and programs targeting children, women and youth are planned than last year.

Activities include entertainment, sports, cultural and adventure activities, all within social values and ensuring community participation.

SCTH supports festivals and tourism activities technically, as well as through media and marketing campaigns, all in line with social and religious values of the Kingdom.

Activities include the Jizan Winter Festival, the 4th Al-Fursan Festival in Al-Ula, the Old Town Festival in Yanbu, Rabea Jeddah Festival for Shopping, Al-Jomaa Market Festival in Jeddah, Al-Hijaz Festival, the Makkah Spring Festival, the Taif Winter Festival, Handicrafts Festival in Tabuk, Zaitoun Festival in Al-Jouf, Al-Na’eriya Festival, as well as festivals in Alkhobar, Hafr Al-Batin, Buraidah, Al-Ada, Al-Aneezah, Al-Bada’ea, Al-Ahsaa, Najran, Al-Majarda, Mahayel, Wadi Dawaser, Riyadh, Al-Kharj and Al-Sharaei.
