• Annual walkathon will be held in association with Dubai Fitness Challenge 30x30 this year
  • Outreach in schools across UAE, competitions for children and in-store activations in Landmark Group retail outlets to be held as a part of the initiative

Dubai, UAE: Landmark Group will be hosting its 11th edition of the Beat Diabetes Walk this year on Friday, November 15th at the Dubai Zabeel Park. The annual flagship CSR initiative spearheaded by the retailer brings together thousands of people year on year to raise awareness about Diabetes among residents in the UAE.

Earlier this year the Landmark Group was chosen as one of the first companies in the UAE to be awarded the Sport’s Imprint Award for their decade-long initiative. The award was presented to Founder Chairman Micky Jagtiani and Chairwoman and CEO of Landmark Group Renuka Jagtiani, by Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council.

Renuka Jagtiani, Chairwoman and CEO of the Landmark Group, said: “Diabetes is a cause that is extremely close to our heart as it affects so many families. We as a family have experienced the impact of the condition too – and therefore started driving this cause passionately to encourage families to come together and make easy lifestyle changes that can manage this condition.”

“With each edition of Beat Diabetes, we have seen the community extend their full support and join us in our efforts to raise awareness about the condition. We are deeply grateful to the leadership of the UAE for recognising our efforts towards the cause and thankful to our longstanding partners Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Health Authority and Emirates Diabetes Society for joining hands with us in our mission to raise awareness about diabetes and drive a healthy lifestyle,” she adds.

This year the Beat Diabetes initiative will also join forces with Dubai Fitness Challenge 30x30. To reach the wider community and spread the message of leading an active lifestyle amongst children, Beat Diabetes and Dubai Fitness Challenge 30x30 will work together to host month-long fitness events in schools across UAE - towards the common goal of inspiring the UAE community to lead an active lifestyle.

With diabetes becoming increasingly prevalent in the region mainly due to sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diets, the need to promote healthy living amongst community has become more important than ever today. According to recent statistics from the International Diabetes Federation, the number of people with diabetes in the UAE is expected to double to 2.2 million by 2040.

The Beat Diabetes Walk 2019 will span 3km and include a full schedule of fun-filled activities for both kids and adults including free Zumba, yoga, spot fitness challenges and a sports zone with Bungee challenge, football and basketball. Participants can also opt to get their sugar levels tested at the free blood glucose testing kiosks set up at the venue.

In addition to the Walk, Landmark Group will also be raising funds throughout November, across their brand outlets in the UAE to support Al Jalila Foundation, a global, not-for profit organisation established by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, towards their diabetes research and awareness. Since 2014, the Walk has raised over AED 3 million.

Open to both kids and adults, registrations for the eleventh annual Beat Diabetes Walk in the UAE can be completed online at www.beatdiabetes.me from 10th October to 22nd November 2019. While children below 8 years can join the walk for free, a participation fee of AED20 per adult, and AED10 for children between 8-14 years will be applied. All funds generated from the participation fees will be donated to charity.

All registered participants will receive a walkathon kit comprising a Beat Diabetes T-shirt and cap via courier through Aramex, the official logistics partner for the walk.

About the ‘Beat Diabetes’ initiative:

Landmark Group launched the ‘Beat Diabetes’ initiative in 2009, with a focused view to spread awareness on the prevention and management of diabetes across GCC and India. 20% of the people diagnosed with the condition live in these regions and the number is growing exponentially.

The Beat Diabetes initiative started with an aim to encourage the community to step out of their comfort zone and show how 30 minutes of exercise every day can go a long way in preventing and managing the condition. The 2018 edition saw over 18,000 participants and engaged over 700 schools and corporates towards the cause.

The Beat Diabetes initiative conducts year-round programmes, community events and media campaigns, to manage and prevent diabetes and reaches over 20 million people annually. Key yearly activities include Take the Test - free blood glucose testing, Get Active- community-centric fitness events, Eat Healthy - cooking sessions and SuperKidz Programme, amongst others. Since its inception the initiative has also raised over USD 1 million for diabetes care and research. The initiative’s activities culminate with the Beat Diabetes Walk organised across five territories in November – World Diabetes Month.
