Dubai: The Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and the head of the UAE delegation, His Excellency Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, received delegates from different countries, on the sidelines of International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) ongoing Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-18). The Conference is being hosted by the UAE for the first time, being organized by the TRA and is running until 16th November at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Apart from international guests, H.E. also received delegates from Arab countries and held important meetings with them, wherein issues of common interest were discussed. During the meetings, delegates also explored the ways of activating regional cooperation with an aim to make decisions that benefit the member countries of ITU.

His Excellency stressed that the UAE is working diligently to implement the initiatives and decisions that hold the potential to serve the information and communications technology (ICT) sector in the region. He pointed out that the UAE is ready to help uplift the telecommunications sector in the Arab region.

H.E. Al Mansoori also welcomed delegates from Russia, Belgium, Spain, Belarus and the UK, discussed topics related to the Conference with them and talked about achieving the objectives of the Union in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as laid out by the United Nations.

Expressing the keenness of the UAE to strengthen the relations with other ITU members, including the European countries, H.E. mentioned that the happiness of the people can only be achieved by effective collaborations between countries and authorities all across the world. He added that developed countries should play an active role in supporting the emerging ICT territories, financially or through exchange of knowledge and expertise.

Delegates from African countries including Burkina Faso, South Sudan and Namibia were also received by H.E. Al Mansoori. In the meetings held thereafter, H.E. said that the UAE is committed to extend support to the developing countries in the field of ICT and that a number of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) have been signed with the countries in the region to facilitate a knowledge and expertise exchange in the sector.

   

Also, H.E. Al Mansoori received delegates from Australia and Singapore and addressed issues like opportunities and challenges in the telecom industry and ICT sector, including crucial topics like 5G and artificial intelligence and the ways to harness technologies to improving the standards of life.

On the other hand, delegates and guests of PP-18, praised the UAE’s effort in organising the PP-18. Notably, Secretary General of ITU, Houlin Zhao have said that the 20th edition of the Conference is ‘one of the best editions’ of Plenipotentiary Conference.

Delegates also congratulated the UAE for the launch of Khalifa Sat apart from thanking the UAE for the efforts to make PP-18 a success. They also admired the economic, scientific and cultural transformation that the UAE has witnessed in the last few years.

Plenipotentiary Conference, the key event of ITU held every four years, is this year convening representatives from 150 countries and a total of over 2300 leaders to set out a plan for 2020-2023 in terms of the latest developments in ICT.
