Campaign in Bahrain targets buildings housing expatriate workers

The density of expatriate workers living in residential buildings in Manama has been reduced by 63 per cent in support of efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The Capital Governorate co-ordinated the crackdown with the Capital Trustees, the Capital Police Directorate and the Electricity and Water Authority.

The campaign, which lasted 110 days, targeted 1,050 buildings inhabited by expatriate workers in Manama.

Capital Governor Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa said the aim was to reduce the density by 20,000 expatriates in five main residential areas in Manama.

Officials in charge of inspecting buildings have so far managed to reduce the density by 12,500 since the pandemic broke out.

The governorate co-ordinated with landlords to redistribute expatriates in different flats and fix unsafe electrical wires.
