Manama: Bahrain yesterday stepped up its efforts to achieve food security.

It aims to build strategic stocks of food production, the weekly Cabinet meeting, chaired by Deputy Premier Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, was told.

His Majesty King Hamad had issued royal directives to launch a strategic national food production project and explore adequate solutions to achieve self-sufficiency.

A joint memo was submitted by Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed Alzayani and Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf detailing the progress of the project. The scheme aims at expanding and prolonging food stocks and constantly monitoring them.

Efforts to achieve relative food self-sufficiency, encourage agricultural investments, conserve natural resources and support sustainable fish farming also fell under scrutiny.

Results of the talks between His Majesty and Seychelles President Danny Faure were praised. The two countries signed a string of agreements and memoranda of understanding aimed at expanding co-operation.

A tribute was paid to His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa for his support to the fine arts show since its inception 46 years ago.

The victory of the Bahrain X-raid team in the Dakar 2020 Rally in Saudi Arabia was also hailed.
