'AGU' Participates in Water Research Priorities Workshop in Riyadh

Manama, WSTA: Water Resources Professor at the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) in the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) Dr Waleed Zubari recently participated in a regional workshop held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on research in the field of water resources.

Entitled “Research Priorities in the Water Sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”, the workshop was organised by the National Center for Water Research and Studies in Riyadh in cooperation with the World Bank. The activity was attended by researchers and specialists in the field of water from government agencies, the private sector, scientific research centres and Saudi universities.

Dr Zubari, who also heads the Scientific Committee in the GCC Water Sciences and Technology Association (WSTA), was invited to participate in the workshop as a regional water expert by the World Bank, as he was a member of the working team that contributed to preparing the water research strategy in Saudi Arabia.

Furthermore, the workshop was inaugurated by the Saudi Environment, Water and Agriculture Minister Eng. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al Fadhli, and aimed at setting strategic directions for water research, as well as proposing several axes, such as the vision of the Education Ministry to support research, the report of the first phase for preparing the national water research strategy, the best international practices in the National Water Research Department and the Ministry’s achievements in regional groundwater studies.

Additionally, the workshop also discussed the draft strategy for water research in Saudi Arabia prepared by the National Centre for Water Research and Studies, in cooperation with the World Bank.

The participants also tackled the current situation of water research and reviewed samples of international experiences in this field in countries such as the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico.

The workshop also included business sessions and discussion panels related to research priorities in water, while the workshop concluded its work with panel discussions in which the participants discussed a draft of the water research priorities report with the aim of agreeing on strategic approaches and suggesting ways to fund research and involve the public and private sectors in formulating these approaches.
