Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, announced on Tuesday the start-up of the second phase of expansion of its Al Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi.

EGA's ongoing expansion programme is adding a total of 66 reduction cells to its three potlines in Al Taweelah.

The company said 26 new reduction cells were added to Potline 2 in the second phase, boosting production capacity by over 30,000 tonnes of hot metal per year.

The expansion programme, when complete, is expected to boost EGA’s production capacity by some 78,000 tonnes of hot metal per year, the statement said.

Potline 1 expansion began production in April, while the Potline 3 expansion is expected to start production later this year.

The statement also noted that the new reduction cells in Potlines 1 and 2 use EGA’s DX technology, whilst the reduction cells in Potline 3 use EGA’s DX+ Ultra technology.

EGA’s aluminium is the biggest UAE export after oil and gas, with the company selling some 2.52 million tonnes of cast metal in 2020.
