Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA) announced today that it has signed three agreements related to its ongoing comprehensive expansion project. The value of the contracts are approximately AED100 million and include  the delegation of consultancy services to ADP Ingénierie, a French company that specialises in airport architecture and engineering, with extensive airport design experience in the UAE and abroad.

According to the agreements, ADP Ingeniere will be responsible for design and construction supervision of the airport expansion project. CORE Engineering Consultancy LLC has been appointed to oversee and manage the demolition of existing affected structures, while the Design-Build of a new sewage treatment plant was awarded to Metito Overseas Limited, one of the largest international companies specializing in this field.

The agreements were signed in the presence of H.E Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Thani, Director of the Sharjah Department of Civil Aviation, H.E Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority, H.E Sheikh Faisal bin Sauod Al Qassimi, Director of Sharjah Airport Authority, Mr. Florent Merminod, Managing Director of ADP Ingénierie Central Asia - Middle East - East Africa / French, Mr. Issam Y. Harb, Managing Director of CORE Engineering Consultancy LLC, Mr. Ahmed Hayajneh, Managing Director of Metito Overseas Limited, and a number of senior officials.

The signing of the agreements came after tenders were made and companies with specializations  in the awarded areas were invited to submit their offers. The technical and financial terms of each offer were studied and evaluated under the supervision of the technical authorities at Sharjah International Airport.

The agreement with ADP Ingénierie includes directing, managing and monitoring all aspects of the expansion project to ensure that all project requirements are met, and implemented, according to the approved schedule and budget and contract requirements. ADP Ingénierie will provide consultancy services to the project management team during the design and implementation phase in order to reach the volume of passengers targeted in the expansion program and the targets related to the level of service set by SIA.

The contract of CORE Engineering Consultancy LLC includes consultancy services for the design, construction and supervision of professional services for the new GSE Vehicle Maintenance Facility, SAA Department of Purchasing and Engineering Building Compass, aircraft hardstands with the addition of 12 remote aircraft hardstands apron pads, inbound road network and supervision for the demolition of existing affected structures.

Metito Overseas Limited was appointed to undertake the design-build of the new sewage treatment plant and associated works, an effluent processing and treatment facility with the capacity of approximately 3,000-cubic meters (m3), per day with provision for future capacity expansion to 4,500 cubic meters (m3) per day.

H.E Ali Salim Al Midfa said, “The awarding of these airport expansion agreements is aligned with the directives of H.H Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and the continuous support of H.H Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Executive Council, to take necessary action to launch the draft Airport expansion future plan. This is part of their keenness to maintain the leadership of Sharjah International Airport, the first airport in the region, in its efforts to keep pace with the emirate’s growth and meet the ongoing requirements of our airline partners that rely on SIA for its operations.”

Al Midfa added, “Sharjah International Airport has earned its excellent reputation due to its high operational efficiency, resulting from an effective management team, who apply the highest international standards, daily. This pursuit of excellence led SIA to select the best specialized consultancy companies to manage these projects, which contribute to accelerating the achievement of the comprehensive expansion that was previously adopted with a view to keep pace with the growth in air traffic and number of passengers recorded annually by the airport and the optimistic outlook for continued growth in the coming years, which requires the development of strategic plans that fit the volume of the expected growth.”

H.E Sheikh Faisal bin Sauod Al Qassimi, Director of Sharjah Airport Authority, said, “Since the expansion project was adopted, the implementation procedures started immediately. To date, SIA has awarded four contracts in the expansion project, which, when completed, will contribute to enhancing the experience of the airport passengers and increasing the regional and global competitiveness of the airport. The design will start this month and construction work will be completed in Q-2 of 2022.”

Parsons Overseas Limited were appointed by SIA in early May 2017 as project and program managers of the Sharjah Airport expansion program to validate the project master-plan, liaise with relevant stakeholders, determine a detailed Scope of Works and action a procurement strategy to realize the vision of Sharjah Airport Authority.

The airport expansion project, with an estimated cost of AED 1.5 billion, consists of several phases, including constructing new building and a terminal for arrivals, as well as aircraft hardstands and connecting them to the current building, developing the roads leading to the airport, and building a new terminal for departures and separating it from the arrivals terminal in addition to upgrading the current building, adding 15 aircraft hardstands and constructing new service buildings. Moreover, a number of facilities that will contribute to increasing the capacity of the Airport to 20 million by 2027 will also be added.
