Ajman-UAE: Ajman University (AU), dedicated to hands-on innovation, has provided its architecture students with an exceptional experience to communicate with and learn from a globally renowned architect.

Dr Farouk Yaghmour, Chairman Yaghmour Architects, Jordan, known worldwide for his inspiring masterpieces, lectured the students on the architecture of traditional and modern mosques, sharing some of his iconic projects.

The valuable lecture was followed by a three-day workshop during which the students were asked to develop an architectural design of a mosque in view of both tradition and modern principles.

Dr Yaghmour, known for his revolutionary architectural creations, is behind the distinctive ‘Spine’ mosque on the Palm Jumeirah. “The real art to building modern places of worship is simplicity.”

For him, simplicity means a more relaxed setting with no room for distracting details. “An architect should be true and honest to his time by using the latest material.”

Traditional mosques require special materials, skilled workers and technology; difficult to find these days, he pointed out. “Contemporary mosques are more authentic, and I hope it will become a trend across the region.”
