Dubai: Heriot-Watt University Dubai will host an interactive digital showcase during Dubai Design Week next month that will feature the work of undergraduate students of architecture. Titled “Living Lattice: Reimagining Living in the City” – the theme of the exhibition has been conceived in response to the sudden change in people’s lives brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the overall focus of Dubai Design Week is on redefining and reimagining the way people will live in the near and distant future, the theme for Heriot-Watt’s architecture showcase has been chosen accordingly. Curated by Dr Harpreet Seth, Associate Professor of Architecture and Manupriam S, Founder of Urban Sketchers Dubai, the six-day showcase will illustrate innovative solutions proposed by 25 third year students enrolled on the BA (Hons) Architecture programme at Heriot-Watt University Dubai, a RIBA Part 1 candidate course.
The project aims to reimagine living in the city within the framework of a lively, fun, open, experiential, adaptive design experiment that encourages building a community. Project lenses of aesthetics, sustainability, context and structures are evidenced through drawings, modelling and photography.
Commenting on the project, Dr Harpreet Seth said, “Designers across the globe are creating architecture that is at the unimaginable crossroad of innovation and client brief. These new paradigms have shaped our habitats, places of work and interactions; they impact our living in the city. In the present times, we are forced to pause and reimagine how city life is organised and we need to s more liveable, human centric cities.”
Manupriam S added, “This innovative social design experiment addresses local conditions and the complex needs of the end user that are lost in standardisation and mass production. This new urban narrative is created to help reclaim the vital interactions and exchanges in our day to day lives with an aspiration for a sense of belonging in the city.”
Dubai Design Week is the region’s largest creative festival, reflecting Dubai’s position as the design capital of the Middle East. The free-to-attend programme is made up of more than 200 events covering design across a range of disciplines including architecture, product design, interiors, multimedia, and graphic design.
Responding to the impact of the current pandemic on the region’s design ecosystem, this year’s Dubai Design Week will offer new opportunities to the Middle East’s creative community, giving centre stage to local and regional talent and reflecting on the role of designers in redefining the way we live in a COVID-19 impacted world.
