Beirut: Berytech joins Expertise France in supporting women-led and women-owned businesses in Lebanon, part of the European Union For Women’s Empowerment (EU4WE) Project, to empower Lebanese women in times of crisis to create their own opportunities in a more gender-balanced society.
Berytech is calling for women entrepreneurs whose companies were affected by the Beirut Blast on August 4, 2020 to apply for the support grant. In the span of 6 months, Berytech will identify 30 MSMEs that could benefit from the cash grant of 150,000 euros (to sustain their activities, their needs will be assessed, the use of the funds will be determined, and the grant will be disbursed. Berytech will also deliver training sessions on crisis management to help women navigate the current situation.
Berytech has dedicated a track of activities to support women entrepreneurs in overcoming the constraints they face to thrive in their sectors and in maximizing their potential contributions to the Lebanese economy. “This is part of our larger commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular to SDG5 - Gender Equality” explains Joanna Abi Abdallah, head of Business Development and Support at Berytech. “We are proud to partner with the EU and Expertise France to bring relief and support to women whose businesses have been affected by the terrible Beirut explosion.”
Selection Criteria
A selection committee composed of members from Berytech, the EU and Expertise France will select the sub-grantees based on selection criteria and according to a grading system decided upon in the planning phase. Eligible companies must be
- woman-owned or women-led and registered,
- located in the area of greater Beirut,
- affected by the Beirut Blast,
- with a maximum of 10 employees
- and an annual turnover under 100,000 USD.
Grantees will be expected to commit to the program till June 2021.

About the Project
The European Union launched the European Union for Women’s Empowerment (EU4WE) project in October 2019. The project aims to promote full and unconditional equality between men and women in Lebanon. The specific objectives are to reduce gender-based violence through women empowerment and to enhance existing institutional mechanisms working towards gender equality.
The project has been launched at a time when Lebanon is facing a major social, economic and financial crisis, as well as a lockdown and social distancing measures due to the Covid-19. In this specific context, the EU4WE’s project is an excellent opportunity to support Lebanese women and men to become actors of change.
