The African continent recorded $39.8 billion FDI inflows in 2020, with Egypt receiving $5.9 billion followed by the Republic of Congo with $4.0 billion, South Africa received $3.1 billion, while Ethiopia and Nigeria both received $2.4 billion, according to a recent report released by UNCTAD. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected FDI not only in Africa but across the globe; therefore, maximizing investment promotion initiatives presents endless opportunities for African policymakers looking forward to economic recovery.

AIM AFRICA, the 2nd Regional Edition of the Annual Investment Meeting set for the 29th – 30th of June has raised expectations for the rapid increase of investment flows to the African continent. The organizers of AIM said the major purpose of the event is to aid investors to learn and discover more promising investment opportunities in the region.

As African policymakers are yearning for new prospects of investments to boost FDI inflows, this regional edition will provide a platform to promote Africa as a preferred investment destination, attract medium- and long-term investments and positively shape the flow of FDI in their economies.

Thıs event is expected to host world-class speakers and welcome more than 25 high-level officials and dignitaries, including H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Sheikh Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan - Cabinet Member and Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of The United Arab Emirates, H.E Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi - Minister of State for Foreign Trade of The United Arab Emirates, H.E Ambassador Mariam Yalwaji Katagum – Federal Minister of State, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment of The Federal Republic of Nigeria, and H.E. Nevine Gamea - Minister of Trade and Industry of The Arab Republic of Egypt.

H.E President Akufo- Addo will deliver a Special Keynote Address at AIM AFRICA on Tuesday, 29 June. His address will mainly be focused on issues regarding the economic development of the African continent and the absolute necessity to attract foreign direct investment.

The Chinese government is on a bullish run to promote its international agenda and has signed multiple MoUs with the African countries to establish its bilateral trade. The African Continental Free Trade Area, with 54 out of 55 nations of the African Union, has encouraged access to the undiscovered land by creating a market of 1.2 billion people and the eighth economic bloc in the world with a $3-trillion combined GDP, that is expected to more than double by 2050.

AIM AFRICA’s diverse agenda that includes foreign direct investment, foreign portfolio investment, SMEs, startups and future cities is centred around discussing solutions for developing trade and investment and exchanging ideas to meet the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
