Bahrainis suffering from sickle cell anaemia could receive special monthly allowances similar to those with disabilities or in need, under an urgent Parliament proposal approved yesterday.

The move is spearheaded by five MPs led by Dr Masooma Abdulrahim who wants the payments to come from the Labour and Social Development Ministry coffers.

It will be now reviewed by the Cabinet.

MPs also voted on an urgent proposal to issue a statement condemning Israel’s recent atrocities in the Gaza Strip.

Parliament chairwoman Fouzia Zainal was deputised to draft the statement and issue it.

Members also voted to refer an urgent proposal – to give unemployed Bahrainis jobs through partnership between the Labour and Social Development Ministry and Tamkeen – to the services committee for further review.

MPs also voted on nine proposals and referred them to the Cabinet.

They are:

* Having a specialised maternity hospital in the Northern Governorate after changes were made to a proposal following feedback from the Health Ministry to have the hospital as a unit of an expansion to the Kuwait Health Centre in Malkiya.

* Having community work hours being counted for secondary school students should they work at mosques and worship places despite opposition from the Education Ministry that the line between voluntary and obligatory was difficult to distinguish and hard to monitor.

* Building a new intermediate school to serve Jabalat Habshi, Abu Guwah and Saraya residents.

* Having Bahrain University accept secondary school graduates for technical studies.

* Forming a national index of people with disabilities to help with better implementation and respect of their rights.

* Having a system for interaction with Bahrain Television programmes for the mute and deaf.

* Developing Raya Avenue from Galali to Busaiteen which has witnessed numerous serious accidents.

Market

* Having a government plot allocated for cattle and herd market and auction.

* Enforcing multi-storey car park buildings for all services’ ministries and government authorities.

A proposal to have the former Alba roundabout site renamed as King Hamad Junction has been withdrawn after His Majesty King Hamad approved the proposal directly over the week.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh has apologised for not attending the session where she was expected to respond to a question by MP Mohammed Buhamood on plans to combat insects following the rainy season.
