From having the world's largest elevator that can carry 200 people to housing the country's biggest Metro station, the Expo site wowed the hundreds of people who availed of the free guided tours launched a few days ago.

The 40-minute public tour of the Expo 2020 site - which starts with a ride on a colourful double-decker bus - will run until August 21.

On Monday, a number of residents and media representatives hopped aboard the bus and got a good view of the mega venue that is taking shape in Dubai South.

Silke Mueller, an excited German expat who was on the bus, said she witnessed an expo in Hannover in 2000 and, now, she is looking forward to another historical event next year.

"I just can't wait for Expo 2020 to take off after what I witnessed today. The facilities, architecture and innovations put together for the event are incredible," she said.

"I also work as a tour guide here in Dubai, and I cannot wait to bring my guests here at the expo site once it opens. This is like a dream."

In less than 470 days, Expo 2020 Dubai will open its doors and welcome the world to the UAE. The excitement of the public to experience what is being dubbed 'the greatest show in the making' can be gauged by the fact that all the seats for the tours - which will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday - were sold out within just three hours.

Green spots

Expected to be visited 25 million times by people from around the world, the entire site spans 438 hectares - as big as 613 football pitches. And some 15,000 trees have been planted around it to keep it green and cool.

The tour began from the Visitor's Centre, where the public was shown a short movie of how the Expo site is shaping up, as well as the past and present developments in the UAE.

Everyone then boarded a bus that showed them around the three thematic districts under construction - Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity.

The Sustainability district takes the form of a huge canopy, which would open during the day and retract at night. Although cranes and scaffoldings were still on-site, visitors were able to catch a glimpse of the pavilion in the making.

Next on the tour was the Mobility pavilion, which is as big as the Dubai Opera. This structure will have the world's largest elevator that can carry around 200 people at a time.

During the Expo, a bus will be picking up people from different locations. Alternatively, they can go by train and marvel at the biggest Metro station in the country, which is also being built at the site.

Upon arriving at the third thematic pavilion called Opportunity, the guide shared that the building was constructed from recyclable materials.
