Egypt’s Ministry of Civil Aviation has helped repatriate 32000 Ukrainians, a diplomatic source at Ukraine’s Embassy to Cairotold Daily News Egypt on Saturday. The move comes despite ongoing flight suspensions in light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“Thanks to the great cooperation with the Egyptian authorities, Ukrainian citizens were able to get home safe on board of Ukrainian air companies, mostly from charter flights,” the source mentioned.

Ukraine’s embassy is negotiating with the Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation to repatriate a further 150 Ukrainians to Kiev, the source added.

The sourcehighlighting the possibility of repatriating other Ukrainian citizens who are still stuck in Egypt with the help of EgyptAir.

Among its efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus, Egypt suspended all international flights at all airports nationwide on 19 March.

Ukraine considers Egypt a key ally in maintaining peace and stability in Africa and Middle East region, Ukrainian Ambassador Yevhen Mykytenko told Daily News Egypt in a June 2019 interview.

In the interview, Mykytenko added, “I am confident that Ukraine and Egypt have a huge potential for intensification of our political dialogue at all levels, including the highest one.”

Ukraine was the second largest source of tourists to Egypt in 2018, second only to Germany, with 1.174 million tourists.
